Innovate Montana News Headquarters

Andreas Scherer

Golden Helix

You might expect to find a leading bioinformatics company that allows the world’s pre-eminent researchers to diagnose genetic causes of disease and evolve patient treatments in a biotech hotspot like San Diego or Boston. Instead, you’ll find Golden Helix in Bozeman, Montana, a university town surrounded by mountains and one of Outside Magazine’s “Best Ski Towns in America”.  After 14 years of running high-tech companies like Netscape and AOL in the Silicon Valley and the D.C. metro area, being in Bozeman is a huge change for CEO Dr. Andreas Scherer - and he couldn’t be happier about it.

“Bozeman is really the ideal location if you love the outdoors like I do, and the commute is unbeatable - I can make it to my office, the gym, and my grocery store in the time it used to take to go two stoplights in DC traffic. To have this level of professional fulfillment on top of that is like a dream come true.”

Describing Golden Helix’s genome browser can get overly-technical fast, but Dr. Scherer breaks it down as “putting high-end DNA analysis capabilities in the hands of researchers and clinicians so they can find a cure.” In other words, Golden Helix has been making it faster and easier for people around the world to transform healthcare and save lives from their headquarters in southwestern Montana since Dr. Christophe Lambert originally founded the company in 1998. This Golden Helix blog post (http://blog.goldenhelix.com/?p=1953) really drives home the difference their diagnostic tools are making in people’s lives.

“People truly want to be in Montana, and they want to stay here after they graduate from one of MSU’s top notch programs... The connections we make with MSU students and faculty provide us with an incredible wealth of technical talent to choose from, and experienced professionals to work with.”

Today, Golden Helix does business with over 200 organizations worldwide and as of Q3 2013, had experienced 60% growth over Q3 2012. Despite their global presence, Golden Helix is truly a Montana ‘born and raised’ success story with the majority of their highly skilled team graduating from nearby Montana State University. According to Dr. Scherer, a great relationship with MSU’s Computer Science and Marketing Departments has proven to be a tremendous resource for workforce talent over the years:

“People truly want to be in Montana, and they want to stay here after they graduate from one of MSU’s top notch programs... The connections we make with MSU students and faculty provide us with an incredible wealth of technical talent to choose from, and experienced professionals to work with.”

MSU students approaching graduation are in luck: Golden Helix is currently hiring positions in sales, marketing, and development and plans to continue recruiting from the local talent pool. So, what can the company offer prospective employees other than attractive compensation packages and an amazing quality of life? Dr. Scherer points to three defining points of a job at Golden Helix that essentially eliminate burnout potential:

“First - people here are creating a paradigm shift in how healthcare will be provided. That provides a rewarding sense of accomplishment that goes far beyond a paycheck. Second - we offer our team the opportunity to master emerging skills and technologies in a self-directed way. Autonomy is key. Third -  what we’re doing offers our people a sense of purpose. Every day they have the chance to change the world with their work.”

Career fulfillment, amazing recreation opportunities, and a chance to change the world.  Sounds like a winning combination from this innovative Montana company.
