Blue Marble Biomaterials is the brainchild of entrepreneurs who have coupled their business savvy with a passion for environmental sustainability. Co-CEO/Chief Science Officer James Stephens has extensive experience in scientific product development, and co-CEO/Chief Business Officer Colby Underwood has enjoyed a successful decade-long career in politics and finance. Both men strive to make a difference, and realized they could make a big impact by meeting the market demand for environmentally-friendly renewable specialty chemicals that replace petroleum derivatives for the food, fragrance, cosmetics, and personal care industries.
“We believe the solution to modern challenges lies in biological and chemical processes that have already been tested by nature; and that there is no waste, only wasted resources.”
The Blue Marble Biomaterials mission is to replace petroleum-based chemicals with fully sustainable, zero carbon specialty chemicals, recognizing widespread acceptance for “a renewable economy” has arrived. The Blue Marble team strives to make the most meaningful impact by enabling partners and customers to lead the market in a post-oil economy. James Stephens puts it this way:
“Living in an era of limited resources requires innovative solutions. We foster forward thinking and agility in our team to create the most dynamic and cutting edge processes and products. We believe the solution to modern challenges lies in biological and chemical processes that have already been tested by nature; and that there is no waste, only wasted resources.”
For Underwood, the decision to locate a facility in Missoula was an easy one.
“It’s been fascinating what this community has done to help with what we’re building; they’ve come behind us and offered us a level of support that I’ve not heard of from other companies out there in other places. We need the help of everyone to succeed. To do that, it does take a village, a town like Missoula to get behind us. That’s why we want to stay here — besides the fly-fishing, at least.”
